I
came to my present career by way of a degree in zoology from
the University of Auckland, New Zealand, followed by seven
years working as a copywriter and author/editor of medical
textbooks for a publishing firm in London. During that time
art was a hobby, although I was asked to illustrate two wildlife
books for publication in New Zealand. Returning to New Zealand
in the late 1980s, I began my career as a writer and illustrator
specialising in natural history books. I have subsequently
both written and illustrated 16 books, and illustrated over
40.
In addition I have illustrated three sets of wildlife stamps
for New Zealand Post, and a set of dinosaur first day covers
for American Post. I have built models, both life-size and
scale, of New Zealand's prehistoric animals that, together
with illustrations, maps and diagrams can be found in museums
throughout New Zealand. I have also designed T-shirt motifs
for the tourist trade. My illustrations have appeared in
books and magazines in Europe, USA, Australia and, of course,
New Zealand. Commissions have ranged in size from entire
museum displays and lavishly illustrated books to single
pen diagrams. In addition to those already mentioned, my
clients have included the World Wide Fund for Nature, Department
of Conservation and New Zealand Geographic magazine, the
Auckland Observatory, several museums and many publishers.
Commissioned work is my specialty. Should you think you
have a project for me I would be delighted to discuss it
with you. |
